SEASON 18 MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT RESULTS
Pick
1. Henderson Griggs - Pitcher- 21 Years Old College
The Norfolk Neptunes selected Henderson Griggs with the first overall selection in this year's amateur draft. Henderson is a right handed pitcher who projects as a starter. Expected to have solid control and be tough on right handers, he doesn't throw extremely hard and doesn't have a dominant pitch. He is an injury risk and depending on how he develops he may end up as a reliever. With the #1 overall pick, you hope for a future stud, in this case this writers opinion is dud. Overall this draft was not very strong at the top, so to be fair to Norfolk, it was a bit of a crap shoot.
2. Gaylord Darwin- Right Field- 22 Years Old College
Darwin is off to a hot start at Low A, already jacking 3 HR's in 10 games. He projects as a solid RF with good contact and elite power. Should make the majors fairly quickly and be a long term contributor.
3. Wilt Garland- Right Field- 21 Years Old College
Wilt is currently listed as a Right Fielder, may have to switch to left as his arm strength may make him a liablilty in right. He could definitely make up for it though with the bat, another HR hitter with power just a level under that of previous pick Darwin.
4. Khiry Merrick- Center Field- 18 Years Old High School
Khiry is determined to go to college and most likely will not sign.
hornetmx "The good news was that i had the 4th pick. however the bad news that i could only manage to budget 14 into the high school scouting brought my hopes down. I decided i couldnt choose a "safe" pick this time around and elected to go for Merrick. He shows a promising rating in the 80s but will more than likely not sign allowing me to get a look at ramping up my budget next year with multiple picks. A win-win for Tacoma.
5. Benny Cortes-Pitcher- 20 Years Old Junior College
A solid pick, probably not top tier stuff, but projects to have great control and velocity, however no dominant pitch.
14. Robert Lee- Catcher- 18 Years Old High School
comment from normal 1 "Catcher, Robert Lee (no relation to the Civil War general) was moved up on our draft board and the Tigers are elated to get him at pick 14. Lee brings a resume of solid defensive abilities along with the big bat. He is a project, but he is also the franchises hope to replace 4 time All Star, Alcides Posada in a few years."
Agree with normal1 on Lee, he projects well as a good defensive catcher with good power and tough against righties. Could be a future All-Star. A nice pick at this point in the draft.
